Frustrations with New Hearing Aids

by | Mar 7, 2024 | Hearing Aids

Many people have purchased hearing aids but found the new tech frustrating. This is often because they don’t have the correct information, the right tools or sometimes the proper hearing aids to help themselves.

I believe the best hearing aids are the ones you forget are there, but sometimes even the simplest issue will make it seem like the hearing aids have turned into very expensive earplugs!

This happened to one of our amazing patients this past week when she came in thinking that her hearing aid had quit working, only to find out that the earwax guard was plugged with a bit of earwax.

It took less than a minute to solve this problem, but after the frustration had subsided, she realized she had the tools at home to fix such a small issue, especially after we reminded her how to do it herself.

Hearing aid repairs and earwax removal are among our services, of course, but for something like getting earwax out of the guard, there’s often a quick and easy fix that you can make from the comfort of your own home.

Another example comes from a different patient – he purchased a pair of hearing aids from somewhere else and was having trouble with feedback (the awful screeching noise that hearing aids sometimes make). The feedback happened randomly, and after verifying all the basic things (earwax buildup, bad fit, etc.), we decided to check the software settings.

This is where things got interesting! One of the many settings enabled in a lot of hearing aid models is one that lowers frequencies, designed to help those with a high-frequency hearing loss hear noises of a higher pitch in lower frequency ranges where they still have useful hearing.

While he did require this feature, we discovered that it was set very high. This was the “Aha!” moment I was looking for.

We recalibrated the frequency-lowering feature to a more appropriate level, which enabled him to hear high-pitched voices significantly better and solved the mysterious feedback problem at the same time.

Sometimes the most frustrating of problems have the easiest of fixes!

Hearing Aid Repairs and Replacements with Hearing Aid Source

Hearing aids are like any other form of new technology – sometimes they can be frustrating if you don’t think you have the capability to fix the problem.

While a lot of these issues could be fixed at home, it’s often more reassuring to have a professional look at what’s going on.

If your hearing aids are causing frustration, know that solving these types of problems is our forte, and your situation could be our next happy story. Also, for those who have hearing aids that are no longer useful for them, we are happily accepting donated hearing aids and we can do a trade-in for a new set of hearing aids.
