Learn About My Journey Through Hearing Care
Jun 5, 2025
Starting anything new, especially something as personal as hearing care, can feel overwhelming. You don’t know what to expect, what will help or if anyone else understands what you’re going through.
How It All Started
My hearing journey began in childhood, though at the time, I didn’t realize it was my hearing that was the issue. I went through years of orthodontic treatment for a receding jaw and crooked teeth – eight years, to be exact. There were jaw manipulations, cracking, locking… not fun. Somewhere along the way, I developed tinnitus, and by high school, the ringing in my ears was constant and exhausting.
Even though I saw top specialists in Toronto, the only solution offered was risky jaw surgery – which I just wasn’t ready to face.
My First Experience with Hearing Aids
Eventually, I saw a hearing instrument specialist who diagnosed me with moderate bilateral hearing loss. Back then, analogue hearing aids were the only option. They had to be adjusted with tiny screwdrivers, and, honestly, they weren’t great. But they were a start.
Over the years, my hearing worsened – but thankfully, hearing aid technology improved. When I finally got my first pair of digital hearing aids, it was like a light switched on.
The Moment It All Changed
I remember hearing birds chirp for the first time. And crickets. And the screech of bus brakes (yes, even that felt special). I actually cried. I had no idea what I’d been missing until suddenly, the world opened up in stereo.
But what mattered most? Hearing my son’s little baby sounds. Now we have full conversations, but those early moments are something I’ll never forget.
Hearing aids didn’t just help me hear – they helped me connect. At work. At home. In every part of my life.
Why I Speak Up
I still see so many people hesitate to get help, especially older folks. There's this stigma that hearing aids are a sign of getting old. But we don’t feel that way about glasses or walking sticks – so why hearing?
Personally, I love showing off my hearing aids. I choose fun colours and get compliments all the time. Why hide something that makes life better?
I've become a bit of a hearing aid cheerleader – especially when I worked the front desk here at Hearing Aid Source. I’d chat with people all the time about how life-changing these little devices can be, and I still do.
What I Want You to Know
If you’re struggling to hear, please don’t wait. Hearing loss affects every part of life – relationships, work, even your confidence. Getting help isn’t about admitting weakness. It’s about reclaiming your connection to the world.
And no, you’re not just buying a device. You’re giving yourself the chance to live more fully – and more richly.
I’ve walked this road. And I’m here to tell you: it’s worth it.
